Session Description: The City of Palm Springs is well known as a visitor's destination. We historically invite thousands of people to the city to attend a wide variety of events, year-round. The Department of Parks & Recreation produces, evaluates, supports, and manages over 130 special events annually. Each event, big and small has provided the City's Special Events Planning Team (SEPT) with the ability to learn some valuable lessons in event management. This session will provide attendees with an overview of some of the significant lessons learned by the City's Special Events Planning Team, provide space for a roundtable discussion for each attendee to discuss their considerable failures, the lessons learned, and how best to utilize your resources and stakeholders for the best outcomes when you face a challenge before, during or post special event. Bring your most significant failure to this session and let's talk about ways to address these challenges in the future.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the impact of special events as both economic drivers and community service programs.
Identify and utilize failure as a process to gain knowledge and tools for future use. Failure is as important as success.
Identify the importance of risk and safety management for special events.
