Douglas D. Houston, President and Legislative Advocate with the lobbying and consulting firm of Houston Magnani and Associates (HMA), graduated with Honors from UC Davis in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and began his professional odyssey with HMA soon thereafter. Mr. Houston is considered by many as Sacramento’s leading lobbyist on all matters relative to local parks, open-space, watershed protections, recreation, non-motorized transportation, and outdoor/fitness pursuits. His expertise in these areas have allowed him to cultivate a pragmatic approach to environmental policy that encourages smart use of natural resources to promote public access and economic development, while protecting critical habitats. Mr. Houston’s professional affiliation with California’s largest trade association dedicated to the betterment of parks, the California Park & Recreation Society, along with his representation of the Sierra Business Council, Watershed Conservation Authority, East Bay Regional Park District, Sonoma County Regional Parks, Tahoe City Public Utility District, and the LA County Parks Department, have established the firm as a leader in outdoor recreation, resource protection, and eco-tourism. For quality of life, work disengagement purposes, Doug busies himself as a competitive cyclist (winning the 2022 Grasshopper Masters Division) and, in his civic life, has served as a county parks commissioner, city planning and economic development commissioner, and is currently an active board member with a local land trust and also volunteers his time at a local animal shelter.
