Carl Cooper has over 33 years of progressively responsible experience of the operation of Parks and Recreation. His current position is Deputy Director for the Los Angeles County, Department of Parks and Recreation, South County Community Services Agency, since 2017. Mr. Cooper leads staff that are responsible for 40 Los Angeles County Parks that span from Los Angeles to La Mirada. He also has core responsibilities for the Department’s Sports Division including all sports programming countywide.
Mr. Cooper has over 30 years of experience working for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, he last served as the Superintendent for the Pacific Region. In that position, he was responsible for 45 parks and recreation centers, 5 museums and one aquarium. He also serves as the City’s Liaison for programs with the Los Angeles Clippers and Dodgers. He assumed leadership roles with the departments Gender Equity Program (Raise the Bar, Girls Play Los Angeles), Gang Reduction and Youth Development, Summer Nights Lights Program and the Citywide Youth Sports for the City of Los Angeles.
Mr. Cooper has a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He played varsity college basketball at CSUN 1984-88 and after his playing days served as an assistant basketball coach while at CSUN. Mr. Cooper has coached basketball at the high school level as a volunteer for more than 25 years.
