Jim Wheeler has been nationally branded as "informative and entertaining" and has over 45 years of experience in the field of parks and recreation. From pool and ocean lifeguard in the 70's and 80's to his current position as General Manager of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, he has worked for cities large and small and counties and special districts. His blend of experience over time has given him a unique perspective that has enabled him to write, speak and train on a wide variety of topics across the profession from operations and training to leadership, risk management and much more. Over the past 30 years he has spoken at more that 200 national and international schools and conferences while providing training to over 20,000 aquatic staffers and park and recreation professionals.
He has provided volunteer leadership to many state and national organizations in many roles including; NRPA Aquatic Branch President, CPRS Administrators Section President, CPRS Aquatic Section President and CPRS State Board of Directors Council of Sections Representative, Secretary/Treasurer and President. He has been a 45 year volunteer for the American Red Cross. Jim also volunteers as a junior program sailing instructor at Richmond Yacht Club and Varsity Swim Coach at St. Joe's High School in Alameda, CA.
Jim's honors and awards include being recognized by Aquatics International magazine two times as one of the power 25 in aquatics has received two SCPPOA citation award.He was given the Paragon Award for Aquatic Safety by the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Othere awards include, NRPA Young Professional Award and national Aquatics Distinguished Service Award, the Pacific Swimming Diversity Award, Aquatics International Innovator in Minority Aquatics, San Francisco's Dr. Martin Luther King Making a Difference, two CPRS President's Awards and the first CPRS Aquatic Section Professional Achievement Award.
