Playspaces provide kids with a range of developmental benefits, but children often have different opportunities in the neighborhoods they reside depending on factors like access, quality, and demographics. The enduring realities of racial segregation and disinvestment mean that local leaders must use data to inform interventions that create equitable playspaces for all.
That’s why the City of Anaheim and KABOOM! are teaming up to identify and end disparities in access to high quality playspaces across the city. Once gaps are identified, partners will work hand-in-hand to close them through targeted playspace builds that are responsive to the unique needs of each community. The effort will be informed by long-term data collection to understand the impact of playspaces on childhood outcomes in wellbeing, learning, and resiliency.
The partnership is part of the KABOOM! 25 in 5 Initiative to End Playspace Inequity, a five-year, $250 million plan to end playspace inequity in 25 places, accelerating efforts towards achieving playspace equity across the United States.
During this presentation, representatives from the play experts at KABOOM! and the City of Anaheim will discuss how they have evolved their relationship, share early lessons from the initiative and practical takeaways for park professionals interested in creating more equitable opportunities and partnerships for play.
