    Native Spaces in Urban Parks: Infusing Maintainable Native Habitat in Recreation Spaces

    Session Description: Love native spaces? Wonder how to create native habitat that is maintainable long-term in a public space?



    This session will dive into design approaches and vision development for native spaces; the importance of collaboration with Community, City and Maintenance partners; the benefits of native habitat from water use reduction to maintenance hours reduction; address soil health and remediation techniques; and provide strategies for long-term successful native habitats in our urban parks.


    • Native habitats promote Health & Wellness by offering psychological as well as environmental benefits

    • Native habitats provide Practical Solutions for demonstration and interpretive gardens, historical and cultural renovations, mitigation areas, fuel modification zones, and botanical gardens

    • Native habitat Planning, Design & Maintenance can be successful in urban parks by securing grant funding, engaging with Community and City partners, embracing a collaborative design process, and partnering with facilities, maintenance, and construction installation teams

    Learning Objectives:

    • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the benefits of including native habitat spaces in urban parks.
    • Upon completion, participants will be able to envision, gain insight into grant funding approaches, and plan to incorporate native habitat spaces within any urban park.
    • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and implement best installation and management strategies for long-term success of native habitat spaces in urban parks.
